A massive victory for the Grapes vs Digit Athletic in the Scottish Welfare Cup on Friday night (10th May).
In Kippen’s first ever Scottish Cup match since foundation in 1910, the Grapes secured a 3-1 win thanks to goals from Mikey Gray x2 and Callum Orr.

The match started off cagey and tight with the Grapes on top, getting lots of shots away but struggling to trouble the Digit goalkeepers too much. A strong challenge from Callum Orr forced the away side into changing their goalkeepers midway through the first half. Digit had a few good chances of their own but couldn’t find the back of the net as we rode our luck. Despite the change and our pressure we couldn’t break the deadlock and went into half time at 0-0.
Early on in the second half, captain Mikey Gray, threaded a defence splitting ball into the corner for Andy Docherty to run onto. Andy pulled the ball back and despite Loic, Callum and James having a few goes, some good defending from the away side meant we couldn’t break the deadlock. A few moments later a free header for Digit at a corner found their midfielder lurking at the front post to nod the ball in.
Following the goal, the team rallied hard and when James chased down a pass over the top, he was taken out by the defender to tee up a free kick to the left of the D. Up stepped Mikey who whipped the ball into the bottom right corner with accuracy and power. 1-1, game on. Not long after equalising, the Grapes were back on the front foot, this time Billy weaved his way through the defence, down to the by-line. His cross bounced around before Mikey took a few steps back to the ball and on a 360 degree swivel, drove the ball home with a left footed volley. 2-1. The game was in our hands now.

Callum Orr completed the comeback after Andy Doc’s cross found him at the back post with an empty net. The Grapes defended solidly as Digit threw everything at us but to no avail, as we held out for a 3-1 win.
We are into the hat for Round 2!
